How to track competitor prices on Amazon without living on the page

On Amazon the price is the listing. A competitor undercutting you by a dollar moves the Buy Box, and manual checks find out days later. Here is a system for ASINs you actually compete on.

Amazon compresses the whole pricing war into one page per product. The Buy Box winner takes most of the sales, and the winner is often decided by a dollar. Checking by hand means opening every ASIN, every day, and writing down numbers that will be stale by morning.

What to track per ASIN

  • The Buy Box price and winner. Not just the price, who holds the box. A price you cannot win at is information, not an emergency.
  • Offer count and new sellers. A new seller at a low price is the early warning. The undercut comes a week later.
  • Coupons and promotions. A clipped coupon changes the effective price without touching the list price. Watch the final price, not the headline.
  • Your own listing for hijackers. New sellers appearing on your ASIN is a different alert and a faster one.

A routine for a small catalog

  1. List the ASINs where you compete, not your whole catalog. Twenty contested ASINs beat two hundred you never look at.
  2. Record Buy Box price and holder weekly, same day. A short sheet: ASIN, price, holder, offer count, coupon yes or no.
  3. Set a response rule per product. Match within margin, hold price and watch, or cede the box temporarily. Decide in advance, not in the moment.
  4. Review monthly which ASINs still deserve the slot. Dead products eat attention. Rotate them out.

Where it breaks

Amazon personalizes and rotates aggressively, so a single manual look is one sample, not the truth. Prices move intraday, coupons appear and vanish, and the sheet goes stale the moment the week gets busy. Past about thirty ASINs the routine costs more time than the margin it protects.

What good monitoring looks like

  • Consistent sampling. Same region, same view, on a schedule, so a change is a change and not a different sample.
  • Thresholds, not pings. Alert when the Buy Box price moves past your floor, not on every wobble.
  • History per ASIN. A price war has a shape. The archive shows whether this is a test, a trend, or a one-day promo.
